The latest facts abut the inclusion of LGBTQ in the United Methodist Church – After April 2024 .
The United Methodist Church (UMC) now supports same-sex marriage and LGBTQ clergy:
Same-sex marriage: In May 2024, the UMC voted to repeal its ban on same-sex weddings.
LGBTQ clergy: The UMC also voted to repeal its ban on LGBTQ clergy.
Regionalization: The UMC also approved a plan that allows geographic regions to make their own rules on same-sex weddings and LGBTQ clergy.
The UMC's previous stance was that homosexuality was incompatible with Christian teaching. However, the issue became contentious and led to many congregations leaving the church. Since 2019, more than 7,000 congregations have left the church over their stances on LGBTQ people.
The UMC's Social Principles also state that all people are due basic human rights and civil liberties, regardless of sexual orientation.
